That time of year again
The first day of a new year. Millions of joyous messages have been sent around the world, wishing beloved ones a wonderful new year, praying for better times in the world, better health, hopes of meeting up soon. Fantastic, creative gifs and posts and reels – with music, without music. You know what I mean. And yet it’s probably my least favourite day of the year. Nothing happens, the Christmas festivities have gone again and now we are faced with long, dreary January.
There are times in the year that herald fresh feelings in my life, after the summer holidays for example when I return back to my normal routines. Then I feel energized and raring to get back to my work, back to the weekly gym visits, back to the tennis club, back to the weekly supermarket shop even. It’s the same after the Easter break.
But 1st January? I don’t feel energized whatsoever. I am dreading going back to work next week, I don’t feel invigorated and motivated and I have had almost 3 weeks of holiday (more than the summer and Easter breaks). I would love to hide away from the world. I feel flat. So this will be a very short posting as I do not wish to spread my negativity around. But I will pose a question: does anyone else feel like me on 1st January?

hello
Hello Jo
Hi Elif – lovely to have you on board my blogs.
I think most of ys feel like that. It’s a massive anti-climax after Christmas. But sunnier, longer days are on the way.
Yes -positive thinking! I like it -thank you.
Haha, yes I feel the same. Back to work, with limited daylight, freezing temps, garden is dead.
On the other hand, it’s a fresh allowance of annual leave from work, and the year less ahead with countless possibilities to do it better this time. Holidays to plan.
And a comment to get off my bum and go visit my dear friends.
Another positive attitude coming in there – wonderful!
1st Jan has always been a special day for me, time to feel grateful about what was achieved and plan for what is left 🙂
That is a wonderful sentiment – one I will aspire to for next year.
Yeah, I feel much the same. Our hopes of change, something new to look forward to never seem to materialise…
Thankfully, a few days on, I am back to normal and more positive. In fact, I just read an article on tips to get us back to normal after this festive break so it seems as though a lot of people feel this way.
At the beginning of the year, I find it difficult to organise the entire year, e.g. appointments, holidays. 🙂
That is the part I like best – with my new diary/calendar with me.
Dear Joanne,
It is very cold outside, the sun is not shining, and sometimes you can see tiny snowflakes flying through the air. That‘s the best time to hide with a very nice cup of tea and a good book. Enjoy the last days of your holidays.
Best regards
Bettina
Definitely!
Hi Jo. These feelings you have on January the 1st are probably just waiting to be into a new novel!! Writers hold the power of alchemy!
Every cloud has a silver lining!
I quite enjoy the new year, I’ve spent days over indulging, not going to the gym, not knowing what day of the week it is, being lazy etc. New year is like a restart, get back into a routine and I feel positive for change – a new start
Another positive one – hopefully next year I can be the same!
